Historically there have been close cultural, economic and ethnic linkages between peninsular India, Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia. Considerable quantum of maritime trade takes place through this region. The countries in this region have shared values, common problems and hence there is a need for closer association, greater interaction, better understanding and mutual cooperation to ensure peace and development.

With this in view the Centre for Security Analysis and Hanns Seidel Foundation planned to organize annual seminars on issues of common interest to India and Southeast Asia. This book is the outcome of the first such seminar held on 25-26 Nov 2004 in Chennai on the Security Dimensions of the region
