Australia to maintain policy on uranium

Chennai, Feb 06 : Australia will maintain its long standing policy of not supplying uranium to countries who are not signatories to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty(NPT), a top Australian official said.

Speaking at a conference organised by Centre for Security Analysis (CSA) here today, John McCarthy, Australian High Commissioner to India said "with the new government in place, the policy (towards uranium supply) is the long standing policy of the labour party that we do not sell uranium to countries that are not signatories to the NPT." "Our rationale behind our Uranium policy is security concerns, where it might be used for building nuclear weapons where it should not be built," he said.

He said the Australian government has not yet formulated a stance in the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) regarding the 123 agreeement and would take into account the impact of the deal on non-proliferation as well as its relations with India and the United States.

He also stressed on India's role for creating a multi- polar Asia and for stability in the region while pointing out that India not joining the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) council was unfortunate. It was important for India to become a member of the APEC, he said. - Agencies
