Book on maritime security released

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: A book on ‘Maritime Security in the Indian Ocean Region: Critical Issues in Debate’ was released at a function here on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion, Vice Admiral R P Suthan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command, said the Indian Ocean region had emerged as a major international geo-economic, geo-political and geo-strategic location. Energy, islands, people and delimitation of international boundaries, were some of the factors to be considered while reviewing maritime security, he said.

Several terrorist organisations in the Indian Ocean owned merchant vessels, which were difficult to track as they kept changing their registered names. The maritime security threats in the Indian Ocean could be divided into three categories — inter-State conflicts, non-conventional threats and narcotics trade. Drug trafficking led to money laundering and gun running and other terrorism related activities, he added. W.Lawrence S.Prabhakar, co-editor of the book, said the theme of the Indian Ocean Maritime Security had gained much relevance and focus in recent years.

The theme of the book was organised on three seminal issues — the paradigm of maritime security in the 21st century in the Indian Ocean region, the perils in the maritime domain and the imperatives of good order and thirdly the pathways, process and policy responses in maritime security in Indian Ocean Region. Lt.Gen. (Retd) V.R.Raghavan, president, Central of Security Analysis, K.R.Singh, Cmde (Retd), C. Uday Bhaskar spoke.

The book has been edited by V.R.Raghavan and W. Lawrence S. Prabhakar.
