"Infrastructure Growth must to improve situation in North-East"

No developmental activities taken up in interior areas, laments Ved Marwah

CHENNAI: Development of infrastructure and change in the democratic structure are essential for improving the situation in the north-eastern States, said former Governor of Manipur and Jharkhand Ved Marwah here on Friday.

Delivering a lecture on ‘Ethno-political Situation in India’s North-East,’ organised by the Centre for Security Analysis, Mr. Marwah said the North-East was in a strategically most important part of the country.

The money spent on development activities had not been utilised properly. The area is rich in natural resources and 40 per cent of the water resources are from this region, he said.

“We are looking at the problems in the region only from the military point of view.” No developmental activities had been taken up in the interior areas.

Solutions vary

Around 150 dialects are spoken in the region. Every ethnic group has raised various demands. The same solution cannot be applied to all the seven States and every insurgency needs to be analysed carefully, he said.

Talking about the positive aspects in the region, Mr. Marwah said no crimes took place in the interior areas. There was no problem among hill tribes living there. Nexus between “polarised” police and ethnic groups further confounded problems in the region.

“We need to invest in something to re-organise the police structure in the region,” he said. As the local police were not doing their duty properly, the defence forces had to intervene and do the work of the police, he observed.
